Spring is here, and it’s time to prepare your food plots for deer season. Whether you manage large or small plots, a smart strategy can boost your hunting success. For small kill plots like mine (3 acres or less), I recommend planting a variety of food sources to keep deer feeding longer and adding cover that also serves as food.
My go-to plants are Imperial Clover, Chicory, and Alfarack. These perennials provide up to 44% protein for antler growth, stay green year-round, and last up to 5 years with one planting. To add cover and attract deer early in the season, try Power Plant. Its mix of Sun Hemp, Sunflowers, vining soybeans and peas. I've seen Power Plant grow to over 4 feet tall, creating a food source that doubles as cover, so the deer are more comfortable feeding in it during daylight!
By planting these, you’ll have a reliable food plot that draws and holds deer, improving your chances for a successful hunt this fall.
